Servers play a critical role in the overall usefulness and
effectiveness in a network. Servers are needed for email
systems, network domains, web hosting, file sharing, print
hosting, application hosting, and a variety of other
important roles. Often times, a network becomes inoperable
if a server fails or is unavailable. As such, servers need
to be reliable and available when clients need to utilize
their resources. Servers need special attention when it
comes to their configuration and administration, so it's
important to have certified professionals on standby.
Click I.T. is certified in, and only supports, Microsoft
Windows Server operating systems.

What are servers?
Servers are robust computers that
contain more computing power and run
special operating systems capable of
providing functionality not contained in
desktop operating systems. Servers
usually contain a lot of RAM, hard drive
space, redundancy, and multiple
processors, allowing them to handle a
high workload. Servers are role-based
and provide specific features or
functionality to a network, such as
serving as a file and print
server, a web server, a remote access
server, a domain controller, an
application server, and many more.

Do I need a server?
Servers are needed in a network when a
lot of common data, applications, and
other resources are shared or needed by
multiple clients. By centralizing
functionality within a network server,
it is easier to find and use data or
resources. For example, if you use an
accounting software package that is
needed by multiple people within your
office, then putting that software
and/or database on a server prevents
having multiple copies of data. In this
example, a server makes work more
efficient. In general, a server is
usually required if 5 or more computers
exist on a network, but an evaluation of
needs is recommended before using
servers.

Are servers expensive?
By nature, servers are more expensive
than regular computers. They contain
extra RAM, hard drive space, and
processors, which aren't cheap.
Additionally, since servers play a vital
role in a network, they also contain
redundancy in the form of extra power
supplies, hard drives, fans, and network
cards. This helps eliminate a single
point of failure, thus creating a more
reliable network. In general, servers
are about 3 times more expensive than a
new desktop computer.

 |
Are servers difficult to administer?
Server operating systems are much more
complex than normal desktop versions.
Special training and experience is
usually required to properly configure
and maintain a server. An improper
configuration change or setting could be
disastrous, which could lead to lost
productivity and money spent fixing the
problem. Click I.T. technicians are
certified through Microsoft to
administer their operating systems.
